Description

PT-141 (Bremelanotide) is a cyclic heptapeptide melanocortin receptor agonist derived from Melanotan II by removal of the terminal amide group and cyclization. Unlike Melanotan II which is administered subcutaneously, PT-141 was clinically developed and received FDA approval (as Vyleesi) in 2019 for hypoactive sexual desire disorder in premenopausal women. In research settings, it provides a defined tool for studying MC3R and MC4R pharmacology.

Why Researchers Select PT-141

PT-141 is a selective agonist at melanocortin 3 (MC3R) and 4 (MC4R) receptors with reduced MC1R activity compared to Melanotan II. MC4R is highly expressed in the hypothalamus and plays a central role in energy homeostasis, sexual function, and autonomic regulation — making PT-141 a valuable research tool for these CNS pathways. Its clinical approval provides a well-characterized pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic foundation for preclinical and translational research design.

Common Research Applications

  • MC3R and MC4R receptor pharmacology and agonism studies
  • Hypothalamic energy homeostasis pathway research
  • Sexual function neuroendocrinology models
  • Melanocortin receptor selectivity studies
  • Autonomic nervous system regulation via MC4R

Storage Instructions

All our research peptides are manufactured using a lyophilization (freeze-drying) process. This method is designed to maintain product integrity and allows vials to remain stable during shipping for approximately 3–4 months.

Once a vial is reconstituted with bacteriostatic water, it should be stored in the refrigerator to help maintain stability. Under these conditions, reconstituted material is generally considered stable for up to 30 days.

Lyophilization is a dehydration technique in which compounds are frozen and then exposed to low pressure. This causes the water in the vial to sublimate directly from solid to gas, leaving behind a stable, crystalline white structure. This powder can be kept at room temperature until reconstitution.

Upon receipt, products should be stored away from heat and light. For short-term use, refrigeration at approximately 4°C (39°F) is suitable. For long-term storage (several months to years), vials may be placed in a freezer at approximately -80°C (-112°F). Freezing is the preferred method for preserving product stability over extended periods.
